Windows Journal was a lightweight, pen-first note-taking application included with earlier versions of Windows (from Windows XP Tablet PC Edition through Windows 8.1). It enabled users to handwrite notes, sketch diagrams, and annotate with pressure-sensitive digital ink using a stylus or mouse. You could create multi-page journals, insert images, and convert selected handwriting to typed text. A virtual “Journal Note Writer” printer let you send printouts from any app into a Journal page for markup. Notes were saved as .JNT files or .JTP templates, with options to export to formats such as TIFF or MHT for sharing.
Windows Journal has been discontinued and is no longer included with current versions of Windows due to security concerns around its file format. For modern, actively supported alternatives with cloud sync and cross-device access, consider Microsoft OneNote or the newer Microsoft Journal app available from the Microsoft Store.
Windows Journal is developed by Microsoft and is used by 3 users of Software Informer. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 1.7, 6.1 and 10.0. The name of the program executable file is journal.exe.
